Purpose: The Varus Stress Test is used to assess the integrity of the LCL or lateral collateral ligament of the knee. This is a key test to perform when assessing for posterolateral instability of the knee. How to Perform Varus Stress Test. Position of Patient: The patient should be relaxed in the supine position. With the other hand placed upon the foot applying an abducting force, an attempt is then made to force the leg at the knee into valgus. If the knee is seen to open up on the medial side, this is indicative of medial ligament and / or cruciate ligament damage. The varus test involves applying forces to the knee in the opposite direction. However, most of these studies have evaluated the joint laxity only postoperatively without anesthesia. Therefore information about the effect of anesthesia on knee laxity is important for soft tissue balancing at the time of surgery. This study was conducted to determine how anesthesia affects the varus and valgus stress tests after TKA. Varus and valgus stress tests of the knee are used to determine the presence of MCL or LCL pathology.
