b'George E. Balch Jr.\n\nSept. 28, 1925 - May 1, 2017\n\n George E. Balch, Jr., known as "Bud" to his family and close friends, was born Sept. 28, 1925 in Idaho Falls, Idaho. He attended Baker City, Ore., schools through sophomore grade, then graduated from Longview, Wash., high school in 1943. He joined the U.S. Army during World War II, serving in the Pacific area, following that, he graduated from the University of Oregon, having played on the Ducks football team and lettering in swimming.\n\nGeorge was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara; and daughter, Muriel Gordon (John). He is survived by his wife, Betty; and his daughter, Valerie Ufer (Stephen); stepchildren, Susan Neff and Charles Neff; sisters, Joice Himmelsback (Ralph) and Barbara Burness; nephew, Jimmie; nieces, Debra, Chris, Kimmie, and Christmas Carroll; grandsons, Robbie and Trevor; granddaughter, Kristine; and two great-granddaughters.\n\n George worked as the NW Sales Representative for Binney and Smith, the Crayola people, for 40 years. His area covered Oregon, Washington, Idaho, Montana, Alaska and Hawaii. He received the National Salesman Award for Excellence two years in a row. Most unusual.\n\n George was a 50 plus year member of the Tacoma Elks Club and a lifetime member of the Multnomah Athletic Club in Portland. He had many wonderful friends there and won many handball competitions. Handball was the love of his life in sports, and for which he won over 100 trophies and awards. At the age of 81 he entered the World Handball competition in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and won second place in the World in singles Handball in his age group.\n\n Gardening was his second passion as he had over 80 varieties of rare plants and trees at his Lakewood home. He personally cared for his yard until he was 88 years old. b'Father Joseph John Beno\n\nJuly 23, 1923 - May 6, 2017\n\n Father Joseph John Beno died peacefully at the Blessing House in Tigard, May 6, 2017 at the age of 93.\n\n Father Beno was born to John and Mary (Fischer) Beno July 23, 1923 at the Beno home in Scappoose, joining his older sister, Helen. He graduated from Scappoose High School in 1942, worked for two years at Bonneville Power Administration before serving in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II. After his discharge he enrolled in the University of Portland graduating in 1950. Feeling called to serve God and His people, he entered Mt. Angel Seminary in 1951 and completed his studies at St. Edward\'s Seminary in 1957. Archbishop Edward Howard ordained him at St. Mary\'s Cathedral May 18, 1957 and the following day he said his first Mass at St. Wenceslaus Church in Scappoose. He lovingly served the Archdiocese of Portland as either Pastor or Assistant Pastor in many parishes throughout the Archdiocese: St. Joseph\'s Salem, St. Mary\'s Eugene, St. Michael\'s Oakridge, St. Henry\'s Dexter, Sacred Heart Medford and St. Monica\'s Coos Bay until he retired in 1993. During his retirement he enjoyed substituting for his fellow priests. In 2008 because of his dementia he moved to Blessing House.\n\nTraveling was one of Father Beno\'s passions as he loved to visit many countries making many new friends. He was proud of his Czech heritage and visited his Czech relatives several times. A lifelong learner, he attended several educational institutes and also led international pilgrimages. Always an active person he enjoyed swimming, hiking, mountain climbing, fishing, camping, bicycling and downhill skiing. He was especially fond of his sister, Helen; brother-in-law, Joe; and their nine children, often celebrating family events with them including many baptisms and marriages. He always loved a party! Gifted with a positive outlook, one of his favorite sayings even late into his illness was "Everything is Beautiful!"\n\n He was preceded in death by his parents; his sister; and niece, Joanie. He is survived by his nieces and nephew, Janice Parker, Carol Galloway, Mary Thomas, Elaine Sawyer, Geri Yost, Marge McWade, Joe Barta and DeAnne Coppenger and their families; cousins in the USA and Czech Republic; and many parishioners...all who loved him dearly. b"Carol W. Callaway\n\nNov. 21, 1940 - April 30, 2017\n\n After gracefully facing a long illness, Carol W. Callaway (nee Marks) passed away peacefully in the afternoon of Sunday, April 30, 2017. Her demise took place at residence in Hearthstone at Murrayhill at the age of 76 due to complications from Parkinson's.\n\n Carol grew up forth in a family of eight children and was early on identified as the daring one in the bunch. Upon graduation from high school she worked as an office assistant in Portland, eventually meeting her husband. The marriage produced two children but ended in divorce. A young mother of two, Carol went back to school to further her education at Portland Community College. This started a new career in the legal community beginning as a receptionist and finishing as a respected legal assistant. She retired from the law firm of Orrick, Herrington in Portland. Outside of work Carol maintained an active social life with a wide and diverse circle of friends. She enjoyed spending time with family, traveling, caring for her home and gardens, and kibitzing about local and national politics viewed on her beloved PBS.\n\n She is survived by her children, Colleen (Tom) Gondolfi, Kevin (Janet) Callaway; grandchildren, Amanda (Nate) Parsons, Alex Forker, Chloe Callaway, Chance Callaway; and her siblings, Judy (Ed) Pahl, Jon (Diane) Marks, Evy (Blaine) Tyler, David Marks, and Pamela Howett.\n\n A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Grace Bible Fellowship located at 12420 N.E. At the University of Oregon he found lifelong friends, and after graduating in 1973 he moved on to Portland State University to receive his MBA in 1978. During Dave\'s life in the world of footwear with Nike he made his home in New Hampshire, Ireland, The Netherlands, Austria, and South Korea. Away from his career he enjoyed time with many close friends and family; fishing, running, playing golf and relaxing at the lake.\n\n Survivors include his five amazing children, Mark, Margaret, Chris, Jack and Wil; as well as seven delightfully busy grandchildren; and sister, Peggy (Terry) Soriano. He was loved and he is missed, and wistfully remembered.
