I'm pretty new to all this in-depth worldbuilding stuff, but I want to go all in for this particular project, so I thought I'd turn to the experts for help. Most of the resources I can find online are for crazy expansive fantasy worlds with hundreds of years of history, so I've been unable to find good advice for my story, which is... the exact opposite in all three regards: modern, compact, and new. So, I ended up here.
I thought I ought to make a masterpost about the thing I'm working on that I could reference back to, and also I love to gush about these lil guys so so so sososososososo much. So here we go. (I'll probably update this later on to be wordier because I ended up compacting the first few paragraphs too much for my tastes whoops)
Earth. 201X modern day, minus a few years. A mad genius decides he's had enough with humanity destroying the planet, and vows to create a worthy successor to replace us. So, he invents a brand new type of robot- incredibly lightweight and sustainable, but easily breakable- and imbues them with both a brilliant new artificial intelligence and a little bit of magic. He then vanishes, leaving his followers to organize the robots and carry out his mission. They hijack a small electric company called General Electric and monopolize the hell out of the local energy market, eventually getting enough funds to make a big building to serve as headquarters for their robot army: Royal Electric. (Comical Villains Being Bad At Naming Is Comical)
Despite their minds being bleeding-edge technology, these robots aren't usually the sharpest tools in the box. They're also a little clumsy, and very easily killed, which are not good things to combine, especially once you give them guns. Still, they're formidable in numbers, and the machines that mass-produce them are getting better every production round. Every month, more are made (not sure how many, but enough to make up for how many died the month before and add a considerable amount to their ranks).
While the robots are usually loyal to the humans who control them, as they've been programmed to not notice the contradiction inherent in their leadership, and usually let groupthink govern their lives, it's not hard for one stirring the pot to get them all riled up together, and so, to prevent a robot uprising from preventing the robot uprising, the humans had to get a little creative.
The machines are not only self-improving, but they're unpredictable and like to improvise- every so often, one robot will be radically smarter than the rest, or have strange physical deformities, like more arms or big ol’ wings. These ones are singled out to act as the leaders for the rest- the orders of the humans are filtered through them, so they can control the general population better. They're almost like celebrities, except sometimes they're useful, and also they run robot armies. The big figureheads are Commanders, and they each have a small amount of Private Officers who help them out. (Is this accurate to military terminology? I hope it's not. It's funnier that way.)
They've been operating for three years now, and they've managed to vaguely organize themselves into seven branches (except really it's eight except really it's only seven). Each department has a specific theme and specializes in one task, but can also mobilize their forces to cause havoc when the need arises. This is, of course, so they can be interesting rotating-villain-of-the-week cartoon antagonist guys, but there's also lore reasons for it.
- The Records department is insect-themed, and they keep track of all the paperwork and documentation of history. (For a group who's been around for literally only three years, they have a lot of that.) The majority of them are specially-made super-tiny robots called The Swarm, who live and work in honeycomb cubicles and have teeny tiny desks with 3D printed little desk trinkets and it's all so cute. Too bad their Commander, Threst, is downright terrifying and incredibly dangerous. (Also, they keep a bunch of headless librarians in their basement. I'm still not sure what's up with those guys.)
- Accounting is separated into two departments- East Accounting and West Accounting- and I'm not sure who has the worse theme to be in charge of the money: the shopaholics or the gamblers. While their main hustle is world domination, the robots do actually help run the Real Legitimate Business where they get most of their funds.West Accounting's "office space" is a giant city filled with small buildings, and in addition to doing their actual work sometimes, they have their own little economy in there. Their Commander, Spritz, is a glamorous fashionista who has many different outfits, and that's totally because she's modern and fashionable and not because I can't decide on a design for her.East Accounting, meanwhile, is a big casino. (Mostly made up of card games, since slots and whatever don't really work on robots.) Their Commander, Duela, is hands-down my favorite character of all- a gambler with a mysterious past and a charming personality and no memory problems don't listen to the medical staff everything is totally fine.The two Accounting Commanders are notable for being 'mental defects' instead of 'physical defects'- while everyone else got to where they are because of freaky physical mutations, the two of them earned their position through blood, sweat, and brainpower.Whoever decided it would be a good idea to trust these two with money management should be fired. He wasn't wrong, but I think he should be fired anyways.
- Research and Development... has some theming issues. Holed up in the small explored section of the freaky infinite basement, they do crazy experiments that everyone pretends don't exist. Who knows what they've got down there? Probably nothing anyone wants to look at, and also a few cars. Their Commander, Niall, is a witchdoctor who thinks he's Robot Jesus, and the Officers include a proper witchdoctor lady, a steampunk starbucks barista, someone who wears exercise clothes despite her whole character being based off of laziness, that one guy who I scrapped a while ago but keeps coming back, and also probably a clown. (It just seems like something they'd do.)
- Security got tired of fighting over office space, so they built a giant bell tower and went to live there. Their Commander, Bliss, is the bell- vaguely based off Celesteela and Bronzong, because I don't know why, she has a natural magnetic field which causes problems if it's not properly controlled. She's also The Zen One. All her officers are based off of the 12 Zodiac Signs, but so far the only one I've designed is basically Zaphod Beeblebrox.
- The Culture Department is probably the most interesting out of all of them. Their Commander, Afora, was presented with a purpose to his life, and he said "Cool! Fuck that, I'm starting an orchestra.". Originally conceived in my mind as little more than a running gag, he's become one of the most important forces in the plot. He's also got waaaaaaaay too many Private Officers, so many that he doesn't actually have any 'normal' soldiers- there's just no room.This department is on the thinnest ice out of all of them- they contribute very little to the actual purpose of the organization, and live in their own world most of the time. However, they've survived blow after blow to their funding and resisted many an attempt to cut off their existence- it seems like their vibrant spirit is just as resilient as the man who runs it.While most of the department is music-focused, and they also probably have a theater troupe running around, there's a very small segment of the department dedicated to art. No one talks about the art department, of course. Bringing it up so soon would just be mean.
- And then there's Hinata, whose theme is currently themelessness. He's the newest out of the seven Commanders to be given the position, and no one knows the reason except for Niall, who hand-picked him off the assembly line and won't tell anyone why. He's still in training, and while he was doing pretty good, the recent appearance of The Plot has derailed that a little. He's named all of his Officers after tyrannical emperors, though, so maybe he's cut out for the job after all.
- (There's also The Unorganized Forces, the groups of robots with specialized jobs but no Commander in charge of them. These are the janitors, the mailmen, the gardeners, etc. They're surprisingly endearing.)
All of this nonsense has gotten way too out of hand, and everyone involved knows it- however, those who do care are too few and too stubborn to make any real change, and everyone else is too preoccupied with 'holy shit they're making society quick carl write all this down'. As it stands, their goals are incredibly long-term, and they consider all of what is being done right now as preliminary testing of the robots and observation of their behavioral patterns... but some of the robots have other ideas.
There's a lot more to go into (commanders' backstories, the different officers, the humans who run the whole shebang, symbolism and patterns, the actual protagonists of the story who are much less interesting come to think of it, dead commanders, niall being spiderman on like aaaaaaaallllllll of the levels, etc) but im tired and its late ill write more tomorrow
