HOW DOES FREE SPEECH WORK IN FRENCH LAW ?
French law is simple: people have rights, ideas don't have any.
What that means is that:

• French law forbids hate and defamation speech (or hate/defamation drawings...) when it's directed at people, or groups. For instance, if I say "Muslims are all barbaric", or "Jews are all hateful", or "Christians are all perverts", it's against the law.
  
• French law allows "hate" speech, or any speech (and therefore any drawing) when it's directed at ideas - whether ideologies (communism, capitalism...), philosophies (existentialism...), religions (Christianity, Islam, Judaism...), or any others. For instance, if I say "the Quran is a barbaric book", or "Judaism is a hateful religion", or "Christianity has a perverse philosophy", it is not against the law.
  

You can satirize, criticize, mock, do anything to ideas, symbols, etc. Only people are protected by the law. There are a very few exceptions to that principle, but religion is not one of them.
WHAT ARE THOSE EXCEPTIONS?
Three main exceptions:

• Denial of crimes against humanity that have been sentenced as such by a french or international court (this, obviously, includes the holocaust). This law has been and is still discussed: some argue that the political power should not interfere in history discussions.
• Glorifying terrorism (it's a very old law: 1881).
• Insulting the national flag. This one is a very recent (2003) and controversial law - and its pretty limited: the Conseil d'État ruled that this law applies only to "disturbing the peace" ; insulting the french flag is allowed for those who "want to communicate, by doing this, political or philosophical ideas, or who do it as an artistic or creative act".

WOULDN'T IT BE BETTER TO RESTRICT FREEDOM OF SPEECH TO WHAT IS NOT OFFENSIVE FOR OTHERS?
It would be a bad idea.
First, free speech doesn't make sense if it only works to please everyone. If a dictator forbids free speech, it's because he usually doesn't want people to say bad things about him, not because he's afraid of receiving compliments...
But most of all, in a society in which free speech should bow to your feelings, a LOT of things would be forbidden... including religions. For a lot of people in modern society, some principles are sacred: for instance the idea that apostates, women who have sex before marriage, or same sex couples aren't guilty of anything. The holy books of the three religion are therefore deeply offensive to them: they could just as well ask to forbid those writings...
There is no logical reason for which, in a society, some citizens should be considered more "holy" than others, or their feelings more important than those of others.
The limitations in free speech laws are only made to protect people - their safety, or their reputation. Not their ideas, nor their feelings.
SO WHY DID SINÉ GET FIRED AFTER MAKING FUN OF JUDAISM?
Siné was fired from Charlie Hebdo after making, in a text, a remark on the marriage of Sarkozy's son with a jewish girl, suggesting he was choosing to convert to Judaism to marry a rich heiress. The chain of events is complicated (see the wiki page), and the Charlie Hebdo director from those years (Phillipe Val) who fired him is still very controversial.
The LICRA (association against racism and antisemitism) filed a complaint against him after this. Siné was acquitted of all charges.
To sum this up:

• Siné was accused of stigmatization against Jews (people), not their religion (idea).
• His being fired from Charlie Hebdo is the sole responsibility of the director of that period, not french laws.
• France, through its judicial system, confirmed that Sine was free to say what he said.

AND WHY DIEUDONNÉ WAS FORCED TO STOP HIS SHOW WHEN HE MADE FUN OF JEWS?
Dieudonné is a talented stand-up comedian, which gradually made attacks on Jews his specialty - and as time went by, he became close to the far right (Soral, Lepen). There are two very different affairs about him.
Note that, in those two affairs, he was never accused of mocking the Jewish religion (idea), but of hate speech, racist insults and defemation against Jews (people), of glorifying terrorism, and of denial of crime against humanity.

• The first affair is the one everybody heard of: the cancelling of his show. In 2013-2014, Dieudonné is presenting a new one-man-show, and some parts of it are considered borderline antisemitic. But wait for a trial to confirm that would have been long, and the politic power at that time (french minister Manuel Valls) didn't want to let the show still publicly attack Jews every night without doing nothing. So, through his departmental prefects (which obey to political power), he asked to stop the show for "trouble à l'ordre public" ("disturbing public order"). That's not really what "trouble à l'ordre public" is usually used for (it's mainly made for meetings judged dangerous), but it's still possible to do it for a show, through an unique case law of 1995 (case law, aka "jurisprudence", is decisive in french law). This decision opened a huge and violent debate in France, including between its different institutions (the administrative court of the city of Nantes canceled the canceling of the show, then the State Council canceled the cancel of the canceling of the show...). This decision is still debated today, and judged illegitimate by many.
  
• That said, there is another affair, or several in fact, which are not known at all abroad: the fact that, on the same matter, Dieudonné was found guilty several times after proper trials. Between 2007 and 2020, he was convicted 11 times (for "call to hate", for "racist defamation", for "racial insult", for "apology of terrorism"...). Those convictions have been confirmed on appeal, and are not a french obsession: he has been also condemned for the same things in Belgium, in Quebec, and one of his french sentences has been confirmed by the European Court of Human Rights.
  

To sum this up:

• Dieudonné was never convicted for attacks on Jewish religion, but for attacks on Jews, denial of crime against humanity, and glorifying terrorism.
• He has been found guilty of this 11 times by french justice, but also by the judicial system of Belgium, of Quebec, and by the European Court of Human Rights.
• Nevertheless, the political power of 2014 hasn't waited for a trial to stop one of his shows with antisemitic parts, and cancelled it in a way which, while still legal, was jugged abusive and problematic by a big part of french society, including some of its institutions.

BUT WHY DOES CHARLIE HEBDO ONLY TARGET ISLAM?
Note, before anything else, that Charlie Hebdo is an independent newspaper: the French government doesn't decide what is published in it. They're read by only a very small part of the population. It only represents itself. And anyone is free to file a complaint against them.
That said, Charlie Hebdo, which is a critical and satirical left-wing newspaper (anti-far-right, antimilitarist, anticlerical, propalestinian...), and the heir of an anarchist-libertarian french press, has a long history in making fun (and even being plain rude/disrespectful) of anything and anyone. The main target of Charlie Hebdo, that said, is mainly far right politicians like Le Pen, not religion.
BUT SOME CHARLIE HEBDO CARTOONS COULD BE CONSIDERED RACIST!
On decades and thousands of drawings, there are very few cartoons that have been considered racist. Their idea to be "bête et méchant" ("stupid and nasty") with everyone (the main equivalent, in the US, would not be The Onion, but more something like South Park) lead them to sometimes cross the line.

Don't think it got a free pass: this drawing, as well as some others, was heavily discussed at that time in French society. But no one filed a complaint: you still can, if you want to.
IF FREE SPEECH IS SO IMPORTANT, WHY DOESN'T FRANCE LET COUNTRIES BOYCOTT ITS PRODUCTS, OR ERDOGAN QUESTION THE MENTAL HEALTH OF MACRON?
As far as France didn't forbid anything (just reacted to it), the French statement demanding the immediate stop of boycotts in an authoritarian tone was indeed clumsy, to say the least. That said, the statement was also highlighting the fact that those boycotts were a reaction to lies and distortions of words. This would not contradict free speech laws in France: defamation, in France like in any other country, is a limit of free speech.
The reaction to Erdogan words were only due to the fact that a president literally insulted another one, a thing which never happens in diplomatic relationships even between unallied countries. The last political leader to do so was Duterte, who insulted Obama. Obama reacted by cancelling their meeting - at that time, nobody thought it was an abusive reaction.
IF FRANCE DOESN'T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH ISLAM, WHY DOES IT FORBID THE HIJAB?
The Hijab in general is not forbidden in France: you can wear it in the streets, in a concert hall, at your job on certain conditions (see below), etc.
But there are two exceptions. Note that those exceptions concern ALL ostensible religious signs (hijab, cross, kipas):

• State-run school (primary school, middle-school, and highscool - college is not concerned). The school is considered a neutral ground, in which children must forge their own opinion, without outside pressure, without religious influence or influence from their parents. This doesn't only concern religion, it's a global principle of neutrality (religious, commercial, and political neutrality, which concerns teachers, but also students depending of the context : during an election time, a child woudln't be allowed to come in class with a t-shirt promoting his favorite presidential candidate, for instance). While the definitive law on the subject is recent, it has its roots deeper in french history: public education in France was born in a pretty harsh fight against religious catholic schools, more than a century ago.
  
• State workers. In France, regarding religion, the State is totally neutral (there is no State religion or official religion). Therefore, all its workers (teachers, cops...) must be neutral too, as they represent the State in their interactions with its citizens.
  

As for jobs, it can only be forbidden in two cases: 1) a clause in the internal regulations of the company can demand than employees in contact with clients (and only them) do not show any personal convictions signs (whatever they are: religious, political, etc.), 2) it can be forbidden for safety, hygiene, or security reasons. But an employer can not ask a employee to not wear it just because he doesn't like it.
FRANCE STILL FORBIDS NIQAB AND BURQA EVERYWHERE!
Yes. And as much as all the other laws were designed for ALL religions, this one (which is very recent) is not. In concrete terms, this law forbids an individual to hide their face outside of certain contexts (for instance, it's allowed for sanitary reasons - the COVID mask is therefore not against the law).
This law was a reaction to niqab and burqa not as religious signs, but as political ones (the signs of a political/fundamentalist islam, associated with the Salafi movement). It was a huge debate here in France, and a lot of people, while being not very supportive of niqab, still think it was a bad move.
Note that France is not, by far, the only country to have forbidden these: Senagal, the Netherlands, Chad, Gabon, Austria, Cameroun and others have also forbidden them.
NEVERTHELESS, AREN'T MUSLIMS STIGMATIZED IN FRANCE?
We have to be more cautious here, as the answer that follows isn't based on something as factual as law. The short answer is "yes": they are stigmatized. But not by caricatures...
Muslims in France are for most or them Arabs, children or grandchildren of North Africans immigrants from the sixties and after. Like all immigrant waves before them (Italians, Portugueses...), they experienced racism, but there are several differences. Due to the time of their arrival in France, they settled in brand new suburbs buildings, in places in which they were not mixed with other frenchs: those places became with decades deserted by the State (regarding public services), and have now to deal with high unemployment, drug traffic, and the criminality which results from it. This led to very harsh confrontation with the Police, which took bad habits: a black or arab frenchman as 20 more chances to be controlled than a white one, as a national 2017 study shows. In addition to that, the colonial past of France, and especially all that concerns Algeria (its colonization, the Algerian war), took a long time to be recognized as such by the State - and as much as Macron recently qualified Algerian colonization as "crime against humanity" and a "barbaric act", this national work is still in process.
All that explains the easiness with which a more radical Islam took roots in some of those places, when salafi movements expanded in Europe: for a lot of young people living there, who feel hated by the State and the rest of society, "being Muslim" is the only identity and pride left. Therefore any attack on it (or law lived as an attack) is extremely badly experienced. This come-back of the religion in public spaces and of its demands, in a country which just finished to deal with his century fight against Catholic Church claims, provoked a vivid reaction on the other side.
This defiance against Islam became a tool for the far right in order to gain votes, then from the right politicians (including some current ministers) wanting to keep those votes. Religious extremists and racist people in France now take profit of the same kind of ambiguity: religious extremists say any limitation of their religious expression (due to the limitations of french free speech laws) are in fact an attack on Islam and Muslims ("Islamophobia") ; and the Far Right implies that every Muslims is an extremist who doesn't accept the french laïcité (an idea which is sadly encouraged by recent polls - even if pools, and the ambiguity of their questions, should always be read with caution). This confusion is helped by the fact that the political left, which in France is historically the keepewatcher of laïcité (a true laïcité, not a preference for Catholic church), is sometimes awkward with the subject concerning Islam, as it doesn't want to attack a religion whom believers already live discriminations as Arabs. And all that confusion is of course not helped by the 20 terrorist attacks made in the name of Islam that France lived in the last 8 years...
To sum this up: yes, it's not exaggerate to say there is a stigmatization of Muslims in France. But it has not a lot to do with the free speech law, or with the caricatures of the prophet, and favoring that confusion is playing the game of religious extremists on french soil. Left newspapers like Charlie Hebdo want to continue to fight racism AND to attack religions: to treat Muslims as equals (to attack their religion as any other one), not to patronize them. That's up to each person to decide if they're doing it right...
AND WHY DOES FRANCE HAVE BUSINESS DEALING IN WEAPONS OR OIL WITH EXTREMIST ISLAMIC STATES?
For cynical economic reasons. But as much as it is not a matter of pride, nor logical in a war against terrorism, it can not be used as an argument to invalidate french version of secularism, which is only about the separation of church and State. The same way we cannot invalidate the secularism legislations of all the countries which presently deal with China just because China locks Muslims into camps (among other niceties)...

POURQUOI CE MESSAGE, MISES À JOUR, ETC.
Hello tout le monde,
Comme pas mal ici, depuis une semaine, je passe mon temps à répondre aux mêmes questions, aux mêmes attaques mal informées ou fake news, aux mêmes comparaisons foireuses... Et quand je vais voir sur les subs étrangers, ce n'est pas mieux.
Je me demande du coup si ce ne serait pas utile de se faire un petit bilan, en anglais, auquel on puisse renvoyer, ou dont on puisse copiecoller des bouts pour répondre aux questions les plus habituelles. Même si au fond c'est une initiative qu'on aurait du prendre la semaine dernière, là c'est limite trop tard...
Le faire ensemble ici permettrait en tout cas de le corriger, de le sourcer, de peaufiner l'anglais, de le rendre plus objectif et froid, de vérifier les affirmations auprès des juristes s'il y en a parmi nous, etc. (EDIT : j'ai eu plein de retours pour la reformulation que j'ai appliqués, merci à tous, restons-en à présent à ce qui pourrait être factuellement faux (questions de droits, affirmations) ou fautes d'anglais objectives !).
Il y aurait encore d'autres choses, sur des objections que j'ai aussi pu croiser : le fait que l'antisonisme ait intégré la loi sur l'antisémitisme, par exemple, ou encore sur la fermeture d'Hara Kiri, une explication de la pensée du modèle laïque français et de pourquoi il diffère tant des autres pays (y compris les raisons historiques), un petit bilan de la stigmatisation dont peuvent souffrir les musulmans en France pour bien faire le tri entre les attaques à la religion et les attaques racistes (mais à documenter sérieusement)...
D'autres questions ont été proposées en réaction à ce post, comme ici et ici : si vous voulez vous y atteler et soumettre vos textes au jugement des autres: attention à rester court et factuel, et à ne pas chercher à "défendre" le pays, mais à simplement refroidir le truc en coupant court aux ambiguïtés possibles, y compris si ça met en lumière des failles et problèmes du côté français.
J'ai bien conscience que c'est délicat au sens où on a nous-mêmes des avis différents sur ces questions. Ça peut être aussi l'occasion d'en discuter.

Le contrôle de l'alimentation et de l'exercice physique constitue un élément majeur du traitement.
Le changement de comportement alimentaire apporte souvent des résultats spectaculaires.
Mangez peu de graisses

• Diminuez les graisses d’origine animale (viandes grasses, oeufs, charcuteries, fromages, beurre, crème fraîche) ainsi que les aliments gras comme les fritures, les cacahuètes et autres fruits gras (avocat), le chocolat, les glaces, les pâtisseries et viennoiseries…
• Consommez plus souvent du poisson.
• Préférez les viandes maigres comme le poulet ou le veau et les laitages écrémés ou demi-écrémés.
• Choisissez pour cuisiner des matières grasses d’origine végétale (huiles et margarines à base de tournesol, maïs, colza, olive, arachide,…).
• Favorisez les modes de cuisson sans graisse.
• Évitez d’associer plusieurs aliments gras au même repas.
• Les graisses animales en association avec votre diabète représentent un risque pour votre système cardiovasculaire. A l’opposé les graisses végétales protègent votre coeur et vos artères.
• Mais n’oubliez pas que toutes les graisses font grossir facilement ce qui est préjudiciable pour l’équilibre de votre diabète.

Mangez suffisamment de glucides ou sucres

• Consommez à chaque repas des féculents en quantité régulière et suffisante (légumes secs comme les lentilles, les céréales comme les pâtes, le riz, la semoule, le maïs, les pommes de terre, et le pain). Le minimum est de 40 g de pain ou 100 g de féculents cuits trois fois par jour. La quantité est à définir en fonction de votre activité physique et de vos habitudes alimentaires.
• Mangez des fruits, 1 à 3 par jour. Votre corps à besoin de ce sucre comme source d’énergie, même s’il fait monter votre glycémie. Certains aliments font moins monter la glycémie que les autres c’est le cas des légumes secs, des pâtes et de la majorité des fruits.
• Le sucre, les sucreries, les produits sucrés, les boissons sucrées sont à éviter à cause de leur teneur élevée en sucre, et pour certains en gras. Ils peuvent être remplacés par des édulcorants ou “faux sucre” comme l’aspartam ou par les boissons light.
• Mangez suffisamment de fibres peut aider à stabiliser votre glycémie : un fruit et/ou des légumes verts à chaque repas. Pensez aux céréales complètes et aux légumes secs.

Derniers conseils

• L’alcool favorisant la prise de poids, n’en abusez pas. Une consommation acceptable est de l’ordre de deux verres de vin par jour.
• Évitez de sauter des repas surtout si vous prenez des médicaments pour traiter votre diabète, mangez 3 fois par jour, au moins.
• Avancez progressivement dans la modification de vos habitudes alimentaires, cela sera moins difficile.

Suite aux diverses manifestations de fierté ou d'intérêt pour la culture française sur ce sous et ailleurs, je me permets de publier un passage de la fin du Contrat Social qui me trotte dans la tête depuis un moment. N'appartenant pas à la caste de celles et ceux qui font de la culture leur gagne-pain (journalistes "culturels" et autres), il ne s'agit pas pour moi de faire tonner tambours et trompettes pour répandre la bonne parole d'un texte supposément "toujours d'actualité".
Autrement dit, afin d'éviter de prêter au Contrat Social des vertus oraculaires que de toute évidence il ne saurait avoir, il importe de ne pas négliger que ce texte est vieux de plus de deux siècles, qui a connu (et connaît encore) une multiplicité de lectures et d'interprétations.
Néanmoins, à défaut d'être "actuelle", la lecture de ce texte me paraît à tout le moins de circonstance, en tant qu'il pose une partie des fondements du débat sur la laïcité en France.
Contrairement à ce que semblent suggérer nos établissements d'enseignement, la lecture d'extraits ne saurait se substituer à celle de l'ouvrage en son entier : j'invite donc celles et ceux qui en auraient le loisir et la curiosité, à prendre connaissance du reste du texte de Rousseau, afin qu'ils/elles puissent se faire leur propre jugement.
Clause de non-responsabilité : je n'ignore pas que Rousseau fût d'ascendance helvétique, mais l'appropriation culturelle l'histoire intellectuelle européenne d'une part, et le parcours de l'auteur d'autre part, étant ce qu'ils sont, j'espère ne choquer personne en présentant ce texte comme un échantillon de culture Rançaise.

Ceux qui distinguent l'intolérance civile et l'intolérance théologique se trompent, à mon avis. Ces deux intolérances sont inséparables. Il est impossible de vivre en paix avec des gens qu'on croit damnés ; les aimer serait haïr Dieu qui les punit : il faut absolument qu'on les ramène ou qu'on les tourmente. Mais quiconque ose dire : Hors de l'Église point de salut, doit être chassé de l'État, à moins que l'État ne soit l'Église, et que le prince ne soit le pontife. Un tel dogme n'est bon que dans un gouvernement théocratique ; dans tout autre il est pernicieux.

Following the publication of various posts and articles showing interest or support towards French culture, I am posting this excerpt from Jean-Jacques Rousseau's Du Contrat Social that I had in mind lately.
Since Rousseau's book was published in 1762, one should not overestimate its relevance for our current times : different times, contexts, problems, etc. Nonetheless, I believe it is relevant for anyone curious about the historical configuration of the debate on laicity in France.
Under no circumstances should excerpts be taken for the whole book : thus, I invite those who would have time and curiosity to attempt to read Rousseau's book in its entirety, so they can build their own judgement.
Disclaimer : I do know that Rousseau was born a citizen of the Republic of Geneva ; but the European intellectual history, and the author's biography being what they are, I hope nobody will feel offended if I submit this text as a sample of French culture.

Those who distinguish civil from theological intolerance are, to my mind, mistaken. The two forms are inseparable. It is impossible to live at peace with those we regard as damned; to love them would be to hate God who punishes them: we positively must either reclaim or torment them. Wherever theological intolerance is admitted, it must inevitably have some civil effect; and as soon as it has such an effect, the Sovereign is no longer Sovereign even in the temporal sphere: thenceforth priests are the real masters, and kings only their ministers.
Now that there is and can be no longer an exclusive national religion, tolerance should be given to all religions that tolerate others, so long as their dogmas contain nothing contrary to the duties of citizenship. I feel like this whole ordeal has given us a great opportunity to discuss, as a group, language in this sub.
I know some would like to put this behind us, but others could benefit from a sane, calm and reddiquette-friendly debrief. If you don't think you are ready for a sane, calm and reddiquette friendly conversation, take your time, there's no need to engage now.
Here are my own conclusions:

• On one hand, we can't deny the importance and size of the English-speaking community of /Montreal. Whatever the real number of English speakers on the Island might actually be, I still think we should consider the size of the anglophone community that participates here.
  
• On the other hand, the fact that a majority of Montrealers are francophones and a just as large contingent of them are unilingual francophones in the city is also undeniable. For many Québécois, the examples of Franco-Ontarians, Acadiens, Cajun, Franco-Manitobans, Franco-Albertans and other linguistic minorities in the country (and elsewhere) proves to them that status quo endangers them. For them it's simply not acceptable and French must be proactively supported.
  
• From what I understand a lot people feel that unilingual French posts exclude English speakers and make them feel like "second-class" citizens, while unilingual English posts have a chilling effect on francophone participation here and alienates them.
  

Suggestion for the mods

I don't think it's super useful to discuss the merits of either perception. If a lot of people feel that way and act upon those fears, that's all that matters right now I think.
Thus, in light of these two realities and in order to fight radicalization on either side I'd humbly suggest that unilingual posts (not comments), whether in French or in English come with a translated version of them to help the other group out.
This could/should be implemented by automoderator (like in /habs) to lessen the burden on the users. Text post could use DeepL while Link posts could use Google Translate.
I think this would be helpful for everyone and address some, but not all of course, of the concerns this "social experiment" has brought up.

As the title mentions I am a French American that is currently working on leaving America and moving to Europe. I have my eye on Dreux, France since it is very close to Paris and, from my research, not as expensive to live. Early drafts of TES texts, archived by translation
A few translations of TES books and dialogues found in the French and German editions of TES3 are based on earlier versions of the texts than those in the final game. Localizations of absolutely massive CRPGs such as Morrowind and Oblivion take some time, and so the texts were apparently given to the translators in their current WIP state, while the English original version could still be refined and polished until the very last minute.
So these are definitely not the typical translation errors and misinterpretations or deliberate freedoms of translation (like the new mentioning of jills in the French version of A Child’s Tamriel Bestiary to follow the alphabetical pattern), but simply translated earlier drafts of classic TES texts.
In most cases, the discrepancies are just minor details. For example:

• The German and French TES3 version of Ted Peterson’s 2920 series featured a certain Hlaluu [sic.] Brindisi Dorom, but the English TES3 release changed his name to Indoril Brindisi Dorom. Khajiiti King Bileel likewise became King Dro’Zel.
• Sylaj, Vata and Xhaferi from the Carvain Akaviri Diary Translation in TES4 were first named Hisshira, Tzenzin and Shenzin. The names are preserved in the French and German TES4 version, but were apparently changed for the final English text.
• The Five Songs of King Wulfharth originally included a headline of sorts that counted Lord of Solitude among his titles (if I recall correctly, this was still included in a pre-released version on The Essential Site). This title is lacking in the final English TES3 text, but is still preserved in the French and German translation, even if slightly mistranslated in the latter. Now, historical Wulfharth being Lord of Solitude is certainly of some lore interest; especially since the “Longboat Legions of the Wulfharth Heirs” of Haafingar are also mentioned in Tobias’ small character snippet.
• The Mythic Dawn Commentaries (v2) include a passage that was originally intoned by Vehk in the Trial of Vivec RP (“Whisper to earth and earth” until “I call you Dragon as brother and king.”) This was cut for the final English version to the degree that only the beginning remained, while the French and German translations still keep the much longer passage in its full glory (with only small adaptations like the reference to Sotha Sil being removed).
• There might be more of these small curiosities that we have not discovered yet, especially since we have only glanced over the French and German versions.

The French Monomyth (including The Anuad & Sithis)
The big fish in this context is the French Monomyth edition. Below, we compared and retranslated all the passages deviating from the original. This text also includes a few other extras that were lost in the final English cut.

• A sentence about the relation of the Hist & Sithis only appears in French (this was first noted and documented by lady_freyja):

The Ayleidic origin of the The Anuad aligns with the mention of this myth in PGE1, speaking about how the Alessian Order systematically destroyed elven writings and how today, “we are left with the beautiful heresies of the Anuad, surviving only by virtue of their popularity and proliferation”. The identification of Sithis as the Dunmeri Creation Myth is still totally obvious from the TES3 version, even if the line saying that expressis verbis was cut. The yokudan creation myth was written with Satakal (!) in the role that Akatosh plays in other myths. And Shezarr’s Song is the most popular creation myth in the Empire.

The Khajiiti creation tale written for TES3 (not by MK like all the texts discussed here, but by Douglas Goodall) already takes a different route from a Rajhin myth. Interestingly, High Rock had more than one creation myth, and so two stories are suggested for the Dellese Isles/Peninsula and the Bjoulsae River Tribes. The Nords later received some musings about their own storytelling traditions and lack of a single, all too definite creation myth, and of course the glorious Shor, son of Shor.

• Most importantly, the French Monomyth collection includes early variations of The Anuad and Sithis, creation tales that TES3 then presented as stand-alone titles (maybe for reasons of space or to increase the number of in-game books; thematically, these two other monomythic tales definitely originate from this collection).
• Here is our re-translation & comparison. Please note that the English texts in the second column are not the original words used by MK in this early version, but are simply our reconstruction based on the French translation! Bold markings point out substantial differences between the early and the final version in the third column.

So we have Anu-Padomay as the Light & the Darkness, more similar to the earliest creation tale in TES2, not yet as stasis and change. They cross something that could be translated as the “Edge of the Limbo of Nothing”. And there is always Nirn instead of Nir.

Here we have twelve planets instead of twelve "worlds", and some sort of Great Conjunction that allows Padomay to return into existence. The role of the future Aedra is already described as the "bones of the cosmos". Of further note is that the Hist are not the trees "of Argonia", but simply "the trees". All the trees?!

The earlier version lacks the accounting of all the tribes of Men & Mer and the specific perspective of the ages of history. In the early version, the “Old Ehlnofey realm was devastated and they embarked on their ships to reach the Starry Heart of the World”, which is Tamriel – whereas in the final TES3 version, the sundered, devastated Ehlnofey paradise becomes Tamriel. All of this might be interesting for Ald-Ehlnofey/Aldmeris discussions and the early Altmeri voyages, from Torinaan to Topal (as allegedly recorded in the epic Udhendra Nibenu, or "Father of the Niben").

• Strangely enough, the French TES3 Anuad paraphrasée (the stand-alone ingame book) also deviates from the final English Anuad, but is not identical to the version included in the French Le Monomythe. So, instead of repeating the whole text once more, the following passages point out aspects of the French TES3 Anuad that are neither reflected in the French TES3 version of The Monomyth nor the final English original. All in all, this reads like something between both these versions.

The main difference concerns the Hist/Argonians (the text explains this later), but the mention of two different branches of Mer – Elves and Dwarves – is also quite interesting…

So, this early tale about the creation of the Betmeri races from Elvish experiments in imitation of how the Hist supposedly created the Argonians was entirely cut.
The small detail about Chimer translated as "les Artisans" or rather the "Crafty Ones" brings us to THE classic etymological debate in the so-called Redguard Forum Madness. "Crafty Folk" was brought up there as translation and controversially disputed. TES3 savant dialogues furthermore added "People of the North", and the final version of The Anuad called them the "Changed Ones”, concurring with the eponymous Boethian myth.
Now, let’s turn to an early version of the Dunmeri creation myth known as Sithis. Again, this is just a vague retranslation. Bold markings point out differences between the early and the final version.

Minor details aside, the differences include Sithis as the beginning of all – not yet the much more Dunmeri “start of the House”, "Aldmer" being changed for "Altmer" and, more importantly, some Aedra/Daedra confusion – Daedra as false gods and friends of Anui-El was changed for the better when the concept of the Aedric “Eight Givers” was introduced. The main difference is that this version explains Lorkhan’s plan step by step, “how he did it”, whereas the more elegant TES3 version has this part cut and replaces it with the double layer of mythic echoes hidden in the cryptic message at the end, namely that you, the Hortator, are a Padomaic Champion like Lorkhan and have to confront the demon at the center. So, this first draft was later considerably refined.
From what I can tell, apart from some deliberate deviations (German TESV, for example, added a Star Wars reference when they changed the title of “Joining the Stormcloaks” into the German equivalent of “Aren’t you a little short for a StormtroopeStormcloak?”), the TESV translation did not include any interesting remains of early drafts. I start to get interest in the Boudhism and Oriental philosophies. Now Im a resillient man' a retired thug lol. I really think Im a good man. Not perfect, not trying, just being myself and Giving love to the few ones I loved. A lot of people described me as a kind of Antihero. Les gens aiment la facilité et exploiter les ressources les plus vitales des uns et des autres. La majorité des gens sont des ignorants car ils accordent la valeur a l'argent et aux biens matériels. Une minorité se conforte à penser que le plus grand bien est l'amour d ces semblables. Qu'ils soient pauvres ou méritants, ils sont les deuxièmes plus près de la vérité.
En premier vient "l'éther", ou l'énergie vitale. On peut la comparer à l'énergie qui circule dans notre corps et même la quantifier en temps restant qu'il nous reste à vivre. En deuxième vient l'amour. Ensuite, les moins éveillés placent l'argent ou les objets. Seulement les meilleurs et les pires personnes sont conscientes de cette réalité. Les meilleurs choisissent une vie simple et remplit d'amour et vivent généralement longtemps loin de tout stress. Les plus mauvais abusent de l'ignorance en donnant l'illusion de faire le bien. Ils modifient l'ordre des valeurs précèdement décrit en donnant de l'argent ( la chose qui vaut le moins sur terre) pour en retirer l'énegie vitale de chacun d'entre nous. Même ces derniers n'échappent pas à leur propre ruse. Les gens ont une perception erronée de la réalité. Si le Christ à su réunir des milliards d'humains partout sur Terre à travers toutes les époques, je suis persuadé qu'un nouveau courant de pensées peut nous faire évoluer et nous rallier les uns les autres. L'avenir est incertain, personne n'est en mesure de prédire quand sera la prochaine innovation, mais si on regarde objectivement et qu'on s'interroge adéquatement on ne peut que constater le plafond de l'avancée technologique. Il reste donc àa trouver la régression. Rien n'est gris dans la vie, cette saloperie de théorie de con de mentalité de jambons stupides devrait d'ailleure être effacée de notre mémoire collective. Rien n'est gris, c'est noir ou blanc point à la ligne. On revient donc à la progression contre la régression. Progrès de la technologie traduit par le controle total de notre univers physique sur Terre, contre la régression intellectuelle (les réseaux sociaux en sont un bel exemple: réseaux sociaux qui on pour conséquences la DÉ-socialisation). Les valeurs collectives sont la base des civilisations, (ou dumoins les premières), pourtant elle n'éxiste plus.

Hi future readers, Im new on reddit and my purpose here is to get comments from some writing I've done for the past months. Im a 25 years old guy, Im in couple with a wonderfull girl and I have a daughter coming up in 2 months. Before continuing take note that english is not my first language so I make mistakes and Im gonna publish In french and english. First I have a terrible past, my parents kicked me out a 14 because I was smoking pot. After that I got introduced to stronger products, with the gangs and the violence coming with It. 3 Days after I got 18 I left for alberta (2000 miles from my hometown) to start fresh with a well paid job and to escape some warrants. It ended up not being busted or killed but worst: being criminaly succesful so I had money to feed my habits and no real bad consequences result of my violent acts. Through all of this I reached a breaking point when my friend got shot with a 308. beside me. I left alberta couple weeks after and I never felt the same person again. I wasn't a teenager anymore no choice with what I saw. Back to my hometown after some digging through de drug trade and a lil bit of violence later I had my own ''gang'', but It was more a team to me. Some snitching later I went to Jail a couple times but never for a big crime and never for drugs, so I never got realy bust for something valuable. I finally met my actual girlfriend through a scamming carceral therapy, I resigned from the dope game a the very last momment, we went living up north , I've stop any drugs except weed and Im not even drinking. I start to get interest in the Boudhism and Oriental philosophies. Now Im a resillient man' a retired thug lol. I have to say than I never lost my fundamentals values even through my addiction (if I really was), I never touch a women, I never attacked civilians for no reasons, I never robbed a store or anybody not related to criminal activities. I really think Im a good man. Not perfect, not trying, just being myself and Giving love to the few ones I loved. A lot of people described me as a kind of Antihero. Hello everyone, this is my first post on the subreddit. Since the beginning of the game, I found that always opening my characters tab to see how many materials I needed to finally upgrading a weapon or a character was really annoying. So I sacrificed a day of farm to made everyone's farm smoother !
To make the presentation, it is a pretty simple sheet available on GDOC & Excel that let you wrote how many materials you need to keep the tracks. There is a Common Ascension Mat / Weapon Asc.Mat / Character Asc.Mat and a Talent LvLUp.Mat. With the tables on differents pages, I wrote some explenations on how the Ascension Materials works with a list of which character needs what kind of materials.
I helped myself with the Genshin Impact Wiki , so if you find some mistakes please, post a comment here so I can edit it and verify if it's the same on the wiki so both the wiki and I don't have false informations anymore.
I hope it will help you as it will help me. I'll try to make updates to makes it better and also up to date at the same timed as the game.

Bonjour à tous, ceci est mon premier post sur ce subreddit. Depuis le début du jeu, je trouve qu'ouvrir à chaque fois le menu de mes personnages pour vérifier combien de matériels il me fallait pour améliorer une arme ou un personnage était fastidieux. Alors j'ai sacrifié une journée de farm pour rendre celui de tout le monde plus agréable !
Pour faire les présentations, c'est une sheet très simple disponible sur GDOC & Excel qui vous laisse écrire combien de matériel il vous faut pour garder une trace. Il y a les Matériaux d'Ascension Commun / les Mat.Asc d'Armes / les Mat.Asc de Personnage et le Matériel d'Amélioration de Talents. Avec les tableaux de chaque pages, j'ai écris quelques explications sur comment les Matériaux d'Amélioration fonctionnent avec une liste de qui nécessite quel type de Matériel.
Je me suis aidé du Wiki Genshin Impact, alors si vous trouvez des erreurs, s'il vous plait, laissez un commentaire afin que je puisses modifier et vérifier en même temps sur le wiki si nous n'avons pas tous les deux la même erreur.
J'espère que cela va vous aidez comme cela m'aidera. Je vais essayer de mettre la sheet à jour pour l'améliorer et la mettre à jour en même temps que le jeu.

Fantasy Book Bingo est un défi de lecture annuel au sein de la communauté fantasy. Sa mission d'un an: explorer d'étranges nouveaux mondes, rechercher des auteurs et des livres, aller audacieusement là où peu de lecteurs sont allés auparavant.
Le cœur de ce défi consiste à encourager les gens à sortir de leur zone de confort, à découvrir de nouvelles lectures étonnantes et à motiver tout le monde à suivre leur lecture tout au long de l'année prochaine.

RÈGLES:

• La période de Bingo 2020 dure du 1er avril 2020 au 31 mars 2021.
• Vous ne pouvez pas utiliser le même livre plusieurs fois sur la carte. Un carré = un livre.
• Vous ne pouvez pas répéter un auteur sur la carte SAUF: vous pouvez réutiliser un auteur de votre court récit ailleurs sur la carte.
• Vous ne pouvez pas répéter un auteur sur la carte SAUF: vous pouvez réutiliser un auteur de votre court récit ailleurs sur la carte.
• LECTURES: Vous ne pouvez utiliser qu'un carré pour une relecture - tous les autres livres doivent être lus pour la première fois. Le but du bingo est d'explorer de nouveaux terrains, alors allez-y et explorez des livres que vous n'avez pas lus auparavant. :)
• SUBSTITUTION: Vous pouvez remplacer UN carré de la carte 2020 par un carré d'une précédente carte de bingo r / fantasy. Exceptions: vous ne pouvez PAS utiliser l'espace libre et vous ne pouvez PAS utiliser un carré qui duplique un autre carré sur cette carte (ex: vous ne pouvez pas avoir deux carrés du livre Goodreads du mois). Vous n'avez pas besoin de remplacer un carré mais il est là en option.
• MODE DUR: Pour ceux d'entre vous qui souhaitent encore plus de défi pour tout ou partie des carrés, vous pouvez choisir de faire le "Mode dur" qui est le carré avec quelque chose ajouté juste pour le rendre un peu plus difficile. Vous pouvez faire un, certains, aucun ou tous les carrés en «mode difficile» - tout ce que vous voulez, c'est à vous! Peu importe que vous fassiez le carré régulier ou en «mode difficile», le carré comptera de la même manière à la fin du bingo.
• MODE HÉROS: Passez en revue CHAQUE livre que vous lisez pour le bingo. Vous n'avez pas à le revoir ici sur r / fantasy, mais quelque part, que ce soit goodreads, Amazon, votre blog personnel, ici, un autre site de critique. Laissez un avis, pas seulement des notes, même si ce ne sont que quelques pistes de réflexion qui comptent. Comme pour le mode difficile, il n'y a pas de prix spécial pour le mode héros, juste la satisfaction d'un travail bien fait.
• Le talent de «champion de lecture» sera attribué à toute personne qui complète la carte à la fin du défi.
• Quiconque remplissant cinq cases d'affilée sera inscrit à un tirage à la fin du défi pour tous les prix que nous pouvons réunir.
• Pas une règle stricte, mais j'encourage tout le monde à publier des articles sur ce que vous lisez, vos progrès, etc., dans au moins l'un des fils de discussion mensuels du livre de / u / MikeOfThePalace. Dites-nous ce que vous pensez des livres que vous lisez! De plus, si vous recherchez des recommandations, les fils de discussion mensuels sont une mine d'or pour trouver de nouveaux supports de lecture.

QUESTIONS GÉNÉRALES FRÉQUEMMENT POSÉES:

• Vous vous demandez si le livre «x» compte pour le carré «y»? N'hésitez pas à demander ici ou dans l'un de nos deux fils de questions simples hebdomadaires, nous vous répondrons d'une manière ou d'une autre! Mais gardez à l'esprit, le bingo est principalement pour vous mettre au défi et vos propres habitudes de lecture. Si vous vous demandez si quelque chose compte ou non pour un carré, demandez-vous d'abord si vous pensez que cela devrait compter? Si vous êtes sur la clôture à ce sujet, cherchez peut-être des recommandations pour quelque chose sur lequel vous vous sentiriez plus en confiance.
• Puis-je utiliser une nouvelle pour l'un des carrés? Oui. Vous pouvez en utiliser quelques-uns, mais n'en abusez pas, souvenez-vous de l'esprit du bingo, c'est un défi après tout!
• Quelle est la définition de «fantaisie» aux fins du bingo? Je considère la plupart des fictions spéculatives comme de la fantaisie, tant que ce n'est pas de la science-fiction difficile, je vais probablement les compter. La science-fiction douce, comme beaucoup d'opéras spatiaux, de romances planétaires, etc., compterait pour un carré «fantastique». Si vous n'êtes toujours pas sûr du livre que vous souhaitez utiliser, n'hésitez pas à le demander!
• Dois-je commencer le livre à partir du 1er avril 2020 ou ne le terminer qu'à partir de là? Si le livre que vous avez commencé est terminé à moins de 50% au 1er avril, vous pouvez le compter si vous le terminez après le 1er.
• Puis-je lire un livre de Steven Erikson pour l'un des carrés? Non! Et vous serez banni si vous essayez.
• Sommes-nous autorisés à lire des livres dans d'autres langues pour les carrés? Seulement s'il est traduit en français, ou a été initialement écrit en français puis traduit dans une autre langue.
• Puis-je lire des romans graphiques pour des carrés autres que le carré des romans graphiques? Traitez-les de la même manière que vous le feriez pour des romans (voir ci-dessus).
• Puis-je écouter des livres audio? Oui mais seulement s'ils obtiennent le bon accent. Toute mauvaise prononciation du mot «ben» entraînera une interdiction permanente.

En raison de compressions budgétaires, la traduction du livre Bingo 2020 a été externalisée. Veuillez diriger toutes les plaintes loin de l'équipe mod de fantasy. Toutes les plaintes doivent être déposées en anglais et en français. Fantasy Book Bingo is a yearly reading challenge within the fantasy community. Its one-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out authors and books, to boldly go where few readers have gone before.
The core of this challenge is all about encouraging folks to step out of their comfort zones, discover new and amazing reads, and motivate everyone to keep up on their reading throughout the next year.

RULES:

• 2020 Bingo Period lasts from April 1st 2020 - March 31st 2021.
• You can’t use the same book more than once on the card. One square=one book.

Exceptions: You may NOT use the Free Space and you may NOT use a square that duplicates another square on this card (ex: you can not have two 'Goodreads Book of the Month' squares). You do not have to substitute a square but it's there as an option.
• HARD MODE: For those of you who would like even more of a challenge for any or all squares, you can choose to do 'Hard Mode' which is the square with something added just to make it a little extra challenging. You can do one, some, none, or all squares on 'Hard Mode' -- whatever you want, it's up to you! No matter if you do the square regular or on 'Hard Mode', the square will count the same come the end of bingo.
• HERO MODE: Review EVERY book that you read for bingo. You don't have to review it here on fantasy, but somewhere, whether that's goodreads, Amazon, your personal blog, here, some other review site. Leave a review, not just ratings, even if it's just a few lines of thoughts, that counts. As with Hard Mode there is no special prize for hero mode, just the satisfaction of a job well done.
• 'Reading Champion' flair will be assigned to anyone who completes the entire card by the end of the challenge.
• Anyone completing five squares in a row will be entered into a drawing at the end of the challenge for whatever prizes we can get together.
• Not a hard rule, but I would encourage everyone to post about what you're reading, progress, etc, in at least one of MikeOfThePalace’s monthly book discussion threads. Let us know what you think of the books you're reading! Also, if you’re looking for recommendations, the monthly threads are a goldmine for finding new reading material.

GENERAL FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

• Questions about if ‘x’ book counts for ‘y’ square? Feel free to ask here or in one of our two weekly Simple Questions threads, we'll get you answers one way or another! But keep in mind, Bingo is mostly to challenge yourself and your own reading habits. If you are wondering if something counts or not for a square, first ask yourself if you think it should count? If you are on the fence about it, maybe look for recommendations for something you'd feel more confident about.
• Can I use a novella for one of the squares? Yes. You can use a couple of them, but don't overuse them, remember the spirit of bingo, it's a challenge after all!
• What is the definition of 'fantasy' for purposes of Bingo? I count most speculative fiction as fantasy, as long as it's not hard sci-fi, I'll most likely count it. Soft sci-fi, like a lot of space operas, planetary romances, etc, would count toward a 'fantasy' square. If you're still unsure about the book you want to use, feel free to ask!
• Do I have to start the book from 1st of April 2020 or only finish it from then? If the book you've started is less than 50% complete when April 1st hits, you can count it if you finish it after the 1st.
• Can I read a book by Steven Erikson for one of the Novel squares? No! And you'll be banned if you try.
• Are we allowed to read books in other languages for the squares? Only if it is translated into French, or was originally written in French then translated into another language
• Can I read Graphic Novels for squares other than the Graphic Novel Square? Treat them the same way as you would novellas (see above).
• Can I listen to audiobooks? Yes but only if they get the accent right. Any mispronunciation of the word 'about' will result in a permanent ban.

Due to budget cuts, the translation of the Book Bingo 2020 has been outsourced. Please direct any complaints away from the fantasy mod team. All complaints must be filed in English and French. After seven days, you will receive notice in the mail regarding what actions were taken and what paperwork we will need to follow up with you.
